Dr Helen Bernhardt
I started at Broadway in January 2021. Prior to coming to Broadway, I was working at Clutha Health First General Practice in Balclutha.
I am Dunedin born and breed with deep roots here. Prior to studying medicine, I worked for 10 years in Otago as an LMC and hospital midwife, an antenatal educator, and a lactation consultant. After qualifying as a doctor, I worked for 5 years in the hospital system here in Dunedin and around the North Island, concentrating mainly on Paediatrics and Women’s health but also ED and general medicine. I completed a postgraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology diploma in 2017. I continue to have an active interest in Lactation with the aim of incorporating breastfeeding medicine into my GP practice. The wonderful thing about being a GP, however, is the opportunity to provide care to people of all ages and walks of life and to really feel part of the community, this is what I enjoy most in my work.
I have five sons who are my pride and joy. They have now grown with two moving north but three remaining in Dunedin. My Whanau continues to burgeon with the addition of daughters in law and grandbabies. Outside of work I love adventures in the hills and beaches around Dunedin with my dog Fred or further afield hiking in our spectacular national parks. I am also a keen art aficionado and pick up a paint brush from time to time myself.
