See more >A couple of weeks before Liz retired, I sat down with her and talked about her time at Broadway.
Liz started in July 1992 at 8 Broadway (Now the pharmacy and Physio, Broadway Healthworks) where Broadway had been for just under a year, moving from the previous location in Stafford Street, This was then known as Dr’s Chin, Bennett and Williams. And then became Broadway Medical Centre. Dr Nick Giblin had started at Broadway the year before. Liz initially started part-time as a practice nurse, when her son was 18 months old. She job-shared initially with another nurse, who left when she became pregnant. There were a few other nurses who Liz job shared with over the years, until 2002 when Ruth McNally started.
Practice Nursing in 1992 was very different in terms of what they do now. Liz mainly did blood tests and the occasional wound dressing. Each day blood test results were dropped off at the clinic and were hand-written onto each patient’s card. The GP’s did vaccinations initially until about six months before the Nurses did the Vaccination course, which was around the mid-1990s. Liz remembers being terrified of doing vaccinations initially! A big change Liz found was when Broadway moved to a computer system in 1994, making things a lot easier, and no more writing on cards!
The most significant change that Liz has noticed at Broadway and in health care over the last 30 years is the move to more preventative health care, rather than just seeing people when they are sick.
Liz said the environment at Broadway has been so supportive through all the changes life brings along the way (a lot of laughs and fun shared by us all) and has made such a positive difference, and she is grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such an amazing team.
The things that Liz has enjoyed the most are helping patients and building long-term relationships with them and their families. She will miss this and the staff she has worked with over the years. Liz hopes to be able to spend more time in her garden, and around the house, as well as hopefully travelling to Scotland and Ireland.
